There is a particular kind of American place that appears just beyond the edge of town. It may have a giant object on the roof, a hand-painted sign, or a building that seems to have been assembled according to rules known only to its owner. These places are easy to dismiss as roadside oddities. That would be a mistake. They are often records of persistence, local pride, and the American refusal to let a small place become invisible. Today, we are going to Kansas, West Virginia, and Maine. We will visit the world’s largest things in miniature, a building where gravity appears to have resigned, and a museum devoted to animals science has not yet found. I am Lenny Voss.
